Days 59-61. A Growing Family

August 18, 2010

The morning after Arthur moved out, Ophelia felt a little depressed and she decided it was time to go out to the park and meet some new people.  She kept a sharp lookout for interesting features because she was ready to continue her experiments.  To her great surprise, she was able to find three men with amazing skin colors–and they had just moved to Sunset Valley.  Their names were Bradley Blue, Garrett Greene, and Rory Redd.  Each of them had been born with the skin colors they had, and that made Ophelia very happy because such a trait might actually be inheritable.  She was also happy to meet a local fireman named Agustin Proctor, and thought he might be able to give her another shot at a child with a dark skin color.

Ophelia’s crops were doing well, and Einstein kept getting great opportunities around town that allowed him to earn extra cash, so they purchased a trampoline.  It was supposedly for the children, but Ophelia was amused to find Einstein on it almost as often as any of the kids.

Even with Arthur gone, the house never felt empty.  There were simply too many children for that!  The twins were so close to each other that they didn’t often talk to Conrad, so he started playing with little Delores.  Ophelia was sure that it was only because the twins were so much older than him–he’d only reached childhood, and they were about to grow into teens.

On Thursday, Ophelia decided to visit Arthur at his father’s house–but when she arrived, he wasn’t there!  Arthur Sr. informed her that Arthur Jr. had decided to move in with his high school sweetheart, Trish, instead.  Ophelia was shocked because Arthur Jr. hadn’t even told her this.  She knew that he was an adult now, and able to do as he pleased, but she’d hoped he’d still let her know about the big changes in his life.

Ophelia called Arthur as soon as she got home.

“When did you plan to inform me that your address had changed, son?” she asked in a stilted tone.

“Oh!  Mom, I’m so sorry!  I’ve just been so busy with the move and getting a job.  I was going to tell you today, I swear!” Arthur said, obviously amused.  He’d moved in with Trish and her family because he’d just started a job in the medical profession, and her family’s house was next to the hospital.

Ophelia felt a little better about that, until he told her that he and Trish had married.  Ophelia was happy for him, but sad that she’d only found out after it had happened.  She almost told him so, but shook her head at herself–she was acting like a sentimental ninny, instead of the rational, focused scientist she once was.  She wondered if being a mother simply did that to a person?

Tripping over her bruised feelings prompted Ophelia to go out and make some real progress on her experiments.  She rode her bicycle across town and made her way to Garrett Greene’s front door.  When he answered and let her in, Ophelia noticed that he had company–some strange man (in a speedo, no less) and a toddler.  Ophelia offered to come back some other time, but Garrett insisted she stay.

Ophelia began to regret staying when Garrett tried to kiss her right in front of his guest!  She staved him off and felt horrible, because if they had been alone that would have been exactly what she wanted to happen.  But Ophelia was all too aware that she was a married lady now, and she had to be more discreet.

Maybe Garrett’s guest could tell something a little strange was up, because he picked up his toddler and left almost immediately after the incident.  Ophelia could only hope that the man wasn’t the type to spread rumors.

While Ophelia was trying to woo Garrett, her twin daughters were turning into teens!  Bianca was the first to have her birthday, and she had been playing in the sprinklers in Ophelia’s garden at the time.  She wondered where her mother was as she inspected her new frame critically.

Beatrice’s birthday took place in the bathroom, just as she’d finished a bath.  She looked very much like Bianca, save for the hair color.  It was certainly obvious that the girls were twins when they wore their hair the same way.

“This will never do.” Beatrice said to Bianca, when she came running into the bathroom moments after she’d aged up.

“No, it absolutely won’t!” Bianca said.  The girls resolved to do something to differentiate their appearances the next day.

Meanwhile, Ophelia had completely forgotten that it was the twins’ birthday.  She was much too busy making out with Garrett in his bathroom.  Once his guest had left, Ophelia used her hard-won charisma skills to rouse his romantic interest.  She suggested a few times that they go to the bedroom, but Garrett had turned her down flat.  She decided to give him a bit more time, and left for home.

After school on Friday, Bianca and Beatrice had both changed their hairstyles and gone shopping for new clothes.  Beatrice’s clothing choices favored comfort and practicality–and she’d chopped her longer hair off.  She’d inherited Ophelia’s bad vision, and she chose glasses over contacts because she just couldn’t wrap her head around the idea of intentionally sticking something in your eye.

Besides, her glasses could double as goggles while she honed her mechanical skills at an invention table.  She loved getting out of school early because that meant she could spend more time inventing.

She learned the hard way, however, that inventing is not without its risks.

Bianca was too busy chatting up Sam Rider on the phone to help her poor sister out.  She’d decided to let the reddish hair that she’d inherited from her father flow in waves and curls, and her look was decidedly more feminine.

“Sam, you’ll never believe what just happened–Beatrice just caught her butt on fire.  No joke.” Bianca laughed.

As Beatrice climbed out of the shower, she wondered how in the world she’d managed to catch her butt on fire, of all things.  Her hair she could certainly understand, but her rear end?  It didn’t make any sense.

Ophelia was out of the house as usual when Beatrice had her little accident, but this time she was visiting her son.  He was extremely happy to see her, because he had some very good news.

“Mom, Trish and I are having a baby!  We found out yesterday, but it was late and I couldn’t call.” Arthur announced.

“That’s wonderful, Arthur!” Ophelia said.  She could hardly believe her luck.  Her studies of Sim genetic inheritance could be expanded to include the offspring of the next generation!  Ophelia couldn’t be happier.

I have to wonder in a legacy like this, doesn’t the neighborhood get overpopulated with people related to the founder?

But, congrats to Arthur Jr. And the twin girls look so much like Ophelia! I was surprised to see how similar to her they are. I wonder if that disappoints her.

Hrootbeer: It doesn’t really matter, because there are no points for grandchildren–in this challenge it’s all about the 26 pregnancies. It will suck for her childrens’ prospects of finding mates, but that isn’t the aim of the WYD.

      I am happy with Arthur’s baby–mostly because it’s Prudence Breedgood’s great-grandchild! :)

I imagine that she is pretty excited that of the twins, one inherited her hair color, and the other inherited Jamal’s–with Arthur, I thought he looked exactly like his father until he aged into an adult and suddenly I could see parts of Ophelia in him. They do look a lot like Ophelia right now, but I’m excited to see how much more they change. :)

Yay! A grandchild! That was very quick work on Arthur and Trish’s behalf! The twins look so unique. And hooray for an update. Wow, if Ophelia is having grandchildren so early, there could be many, many generations of Oftpregs before the challenge ends.

Rad: Indeed it was quick! Twallan’s Story Progression mod at work! :)

Oftpregs are going to be everywhere….I might have to tweak the mod a bit to keep the town from being overrun–not that I’m that concerned about it. It would be more of a problem if I was doing a legacy.

Wow, Bianca and Beatrice look so much like Ophelia! I actually almost thought that first picture of Bianca WAS Ophelia. And then I realised the hair was different and that she was actually a teen!

You know, if Ophelia has a baby with Garrett, Einstein might start to suspect that she’s not exactly faithful. I wonder what’ll happen there.

Yay, Ophelia’s going to be a grandma! I love how she’s already looking at it as part of her study!

Carla: They do seem to look a lot like her. I am excited for them to grow up because that’s really the time when you can see more of the subtle inheritances.

Ophelia will indeed have a hard time explaining babies with the skin colors of those men….but inheritance in the Sims is a tricky thing, and she is a smart lady. ;)

She’s excited to be a grandma too. You know Ophelia–anything to help her research into Sim genetic inheritance! :)

Thank you for reading and commenting!

Yay, another Oftpreg update! I’m so glad Arthur and Trish are moving forward with their relationship! Can’t wait to see the baby.

Bianca and Beatrice do look a LOT alike. You can definitely tell they’re twins. Ophelia should get a kick out of their similarities as well as their differences.

I’m hoping to see a green baby in the future! ;)

Styxlady: I’m glad they took the next step, too. :) The new baby will in the next post.

It’s just so funny, because in my experience, most Sim children look alike. I didn’t think anything of Bianca and Beatrice looking a bit alike when they were children (especially since they had different shades of hair), but when they both aged up into the same hairstyle, it was crazy how much they looked alike!

I’d love to see a green baby, too. Even though it means Ophelia would have a lot of ‘splainin’ to do.

Ok, a trampoline??? I NEED to get Ambitions! lol. And why do your sims look different now? Did you download a mod or something? They look good though. I noticed it on Ed and others in your other story. Loved this chapter and I am liking the twins and how having more people in the house adds more liveliness to the story.

      Amyjobee: Ambitions is fun. :)

I downloaded a skin set, and it’s changed the way most of the Sims look. I finally went over to the dark side and picked up some mods and cc. I was too scared to do it for a while, but given what they can do for my storytelling (especially for the Edith Prescott Mystery series), I just couldn’t resist anymore! You can see which mods and cc I’m using here: http://simstoriesbyrachel.wordpress.com/resources-mods-cc/

I find this story so amusing. At times, I feel that Ophelia is forcing herself to be detached from her children and finds it hardest to do with Arthur.

HeredonCove: I’m so glad you like it. :) I think she does work to try and keep her scientist-hat on over the Mommy-frizz. Being a scientist is the thing she identifies with the most, and I think she’s worried that she can’t fully incorporate the mommy part of her identity without losing something of the scientist. She seems to be unaware that she’s already done it, lol.

You are exactly right that it is hardest for her to do with Arthur. He was her first baby–her little boy. They spent more time together than she’s ever spent with anyone else and it was hard on her when he moved out and started a life on his own. It’s not that she doesn’t love her other children, but Arthur is simply special to her.

Yay for Arthur and Trish getting married and having a baby! Prudence lives forever!

Was it after the green bathroom scene that the skins changed? I really noticed it after that.

    Great trampoline shot!

DB: I know! I’m so happy for them! I can’t wait to see what that baby looks like. :)

It was a little before that–two or three of the first pictures were taken pre-new skins, but the rest were taken after the change.

Thanks, the kids and Einstein absolutely adore that trampoline! :)

  10. August 23, 2010 11:27 pm

I love this story. I think it’s better than Prudence’s attempt, but it’s nice to see her family surviving.
It’s funny. Ophelia is just so perfect in a strange way.

Pinkfiend1: Thank you so much! Ophelia’s reason for wanting so many children is a little easier to understand. Prudence never really wanted a lot of children, but she was going to have them because of all the risky woohoo she’d be having to inspire her romance novels. I’m very happy that her family is surviving on for another generation. Ophelia is a strange lady, no doubt. :) I’m really glad you like my story, and that you took the time to comment!
